With temperate, subtropical and coastal environments the diversity of bird life on the Macleay Valley is pretty darn amazing. Both novice and die-hard bird watchers are virtually guaranteed of spotting a huge range of bird, from raptors and waterbirds to the feathered natives of the Australian bush.
The Bird Hide is an excellent place to spot wetland birds and is located just outside of South West Rocks off Boyters Lane. There is parking, an information hut and bird hide. You can either sit in the bird hide or take the two kilometres of built walkways. The Macleay has a range of migratory bird life, so you are likely to see different birds throughout the year.
One of the remarkable points to note about the site where the bird hide is located is that it previously was a rundown dairy farm. The site was rehabilitated by the local council who planted 15,000 native trees and shrubs, protected and improved eight hectares of mangrove and saltmarsh, built the walkway and constructed the bird hide and information hut.
